Gosepl Hymns CD - Moving again

Hello web land, Greg Vail, AKA SAXBOY, checkin in today.

For those following the Guardala Scam, nothing new to report other than Extradition is a process and takes a while.

On to the music. I meet with Bobby Cruz last night to deal with file organization and attempt to get the Gospel CD moving forward again.

The issues of file management have been a big discussion as of late in my world. I even had a friend say that if he wrote a book on any topic, it would be this; Managing files for ProTools Sessions. HE shared a few recent nightmares and gave me some good suggestions for repairing our problem.

What we are doing is working on parts of the same CD and song on 2 different systems, different cities, different formats (PC & MAC), not all the same plugins or soft synths, ProTools and Reason on both systems, and we are just guys and musicians on top of that, so we have a double messy mark against us too. If it was just Bobby, he would have a mess with files all over different drives and locations with different names. If it was just me, all of the same with my most common error being = moving a file to the flash drive instead of copy / then later assuming it is on a computer and dumping the files to make room for more music that needs to be transfered.

Now, put us together - WOW!

I talked with Bobby last week and he told me he was working on Chords and a Bass line to a tune I had filed as done 8 months ago. When he pulled up the latest file by the 'last modified' list, it only had drum loops and Reason drum parts. I talked to him and said, "Stop everything. Don't spend another minute until we can fix these file issues."

What we did.

We moved all the Reason Files and ProTools Files to the same folder on both our systems. We agreed on a file name structure that included the song name, date modified, version on that date if needed, and who did that work by adding our initials to the end. Then, when we have a file the same on both systems again, we end it with both our initials. Made sense last night. I hope it works in the big picture.

I then came home and began mirroring that file structure. The only thing I added was an Archive file to dump earlier versions inside of. I wanted the latest version of each track, right there when I opened the project file. The other thing we are trying is naming the ProTools and Reason Files the very same thing. I don't know if you can attach a Reason File to a ProTools session, but as for now, naming them the same thing and storing the Reason File in the ProTools Session seems to make good sense.

With all that said. I am really wanting this CD done and out before years end. Stay tuned for a Day in the Life of a Sax Player to see if it is even possible.

Hello, Greg. I have recently found you searching for gospel saxophonists on google. First of thank you for carving out space on the web for people interested in sax (from the players perspective). I'm not a professional player by any means, but i get great joy playing for the Lord. I some college playing experience. I would to further develop as a skilled sax player. i've read some of your articles. I have a track I would like you check out. Any constructive feedback would be great. This was kinda of an impromptu performance with an organist friend of mine. i'm using a Claude Lackey 7*3 mpc and a Antigua Winds Alto.

The track is not recorded very well so the many of the finer details in the sax playing are a bit lost. From what I can tell, you have many nice things going on. A nice use of range, vibrato, pitch seems good overall, and I would guess your tone is very good too, but hard to tell.

You sound better on this than many of the sax players I hear recorded at CD Baby. You might take a a few minutes to search Gospel Sax CDs and listen to where you think you fit into the mix. You might be pleasantly surprised!

Remember your focus. I would imagine God was pleased and he is the real audience we hope to touch. If you bless God with your heart and efforts, many other great things will come from that!
