Busy October
Just a quick update here. I always remind folks that the short posts and days missed are always a good thing. It means stuff is getting done!
The Smooth Jazz Classics CD is moving forward. Tony recorded David Pack on a song he wrote some 20 years ago - Biggest Part Of Me. David played in the places the Sax carried on the original. I think it's really cool the way it worked out. I was called in to play on the new release of the original Ambrosia CD and played the solos on this song a few months ago. Then David ended up recording the same parts I played for his new recording - the sax parts - on my new CD but on Guitar. Sounds confusing but it was really cool.
My efforts have been on arranging the past 2 weeks. I finished the Stevie Wonder arranging and tracking last week for All In Love Is Fair. I did 5 winds (2 flutes, 2 clarinets, bass clarinet) and arranged 4 string parts (Violin, Viola, Cello and Double Bass) and did 2 performances of each part - one with Yamaha VLM70 sounds and one using Roland String patches. The end product was very nice, full and real sounding. I used the new EWI 4000 to track all the parts so there is nice expression, vibrato and all on each track. Unlike a string patch played in chordal fashion, recording arranged lines and capturing actual performances seems to make a big difference for me.
Now, on to brass parts. I have been working with a great funk track and laid down some great Bari parts. I then worked thru them with a midi trumpet patch to outline the parts I want the horns to play. Now I am filling in the blanks to add chordal information for the actual parts. Once I have the sound right I will take it all down for performance by myself and some brass guys. I am having fun playing with this stuff!
That's up to now on CD News.
Back to work for now.
Hope you all have a safe Halloween!
