SAXBOY Saxophone Player Greg Vail - sax

Playing music is not all play....

A DAY IN A LIFE - that is the concept of this blog - What does a sax player / musician do in their job?? So few understand and I decided to spill the beans years ago when I started this blob. FYI - A DAY IN A LIFE is the starting lyrics for a song. A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A FOOL......
This is the time in my life that I feel the fool..... kinda.

I am in the middle of bookkeeping hell this month and will be pretty MIA until I can get 2010 books ready for the tax lady. The double extension date is OCT 15th for those that don't know when most of my world files their taxes.

The artistic folks out there do not tend to excel at bookkeeping. Sad but true.

I am not having fun but doing my best to get everything done and done correctly.

As a musician - I have to hustle to find and book my jobs.
Then I have to prepare and play those jobs well to get any repeat bookings.
Then I have to attempt to keep some of the money myself, tracking expenses and keeping the business straight.

I feel like I work 3 times for every dollar earned. And at today's rates, we are stuck with gigs paying less than they did when I was in college! Forget about the inflation and cost of living. Expenses run nearly double what they were 25 years ago and pay runs flat and or less than it was then. Overall, live venues are nearly gone and CD music is mostly traded or outright stolen.

SO - here I sit trying to work for 2010's lame bread, for the third time so I can continue to make less money after bills and expenses - AND WHY?

I actually love what I do - well the second part of the 3. It is called PLAYING MUSIC! I love the few hours a week I actually get to play a saxophone and contribute to the good on this planet. You might think I am nuts but I can imagine no other option.

Back to my cave. I have 1000 receipts to separate and input into a ledger with fingers crossed that I don't set off some alarm and get audited for not doing good enough.....

Can't wait for the minutes with a sax in my hand later tonight

Listening is so much more important than once thought.

Direction for musical improvement.

I had an encounter with Mapquest that drove home a lesson we need to remember in music.

First statement – You can’t get anywhere with out directions!

Second statement – You need 2 pieces of information – your starting location and your destination address.

Then press - Get DIRECTIONS..........

I knew I needed to get to the Sioux Falls airport. That address was easy to find.

Problem was the house I was staying at, out in the country. I could not find an address anywhere in the house so I guessed cross streets and wrote down those directions. Problem was I didn’t remember the street names/numbers EXACTLY and that meant my directions started somewhere unknown, but I didn’t know that.

SO – you want to play better sax, guitar or whatever?? The place to start is listening to your instrument played really well. Sounds like a natural, but I find too many kids have never listened to – lets say – jazz alto sax – yet come to me for private lessons to teach them jazz solo improv for the alto sax.

You have to listen to have any idea what you are supposed to sound like. Listening is not a quick scan of the first 30 seconds of a song. Listening is sticking it on an iPod and listening every day. You need to let it get into your brain and subconscious too…

If you do only 1 thing to learn or prepare for any music playing job – you need to listen so you have a chance of knowing how the song goes. Song form, the style of playing your instrument is employing, and where each part goes comes from listening to your instrument in any song style you want to play well. If it is in your head – it will have a chance of coming out your fingers! If you are clueless, you will sound clueless.

This is a MapQuest DESTINATION. You have to have an idea were you are going or directions wont matter. As ScareCrow said in Wizard of Oz, “If you don’t know where you are going, any road will lead you there!”

If you want to improve and be better as a musician – You must have an idea what 'better' sounds like!

MapQuest has a starting location box. Where are you?

As I drove lost thru the cornfields, my friend called my cell and asked, “Where are you?”  He wanted me to join them at the airport, but we both realized there was a big problem when I couldn’t tell him where I was. I was in corn fields! I couldn't even tell how long it might be before I saw a street sign. I had NO IDEA where I was.

Where are you at musically?? Do you really know? Do you even want to know? Few ever ask that question. Many would rather believe a fluffy lie than look hard into the truth that they need to improve.

I record myself all the time. I have recorded myself as far back as I can remember – even in Junior High School with a giant Kmart tape recorder! If any one wants to know how I have gotten better on sax – the answer is RECORD and LISTEN BACK! I hear things I hate – It makes me want to fix them and be better. That formula times 30+ plus years equals = really good musicianship.

Tascam has a digital recorder under 100 bucks – flash – sounds amazing – easy to use.

If you care about getting better – get serious about it. Record yourself, listen, and practice to sound better.

This is the entire formula – neat and simple!

Listen to your instrument played great (You Tube, CDs, Pandora?)

Listen to the music you need to play (Jazz music, classic rock, country?)

Assess where you are musically (Honest, record and listen for real)

Start with where you are – move in the direction of where you want to go.

After spending some time trying on your own – get a teacher if you need technical help moving forward.

Most people don’t spend enough time trying to define where they want to go.

Even more people are guilty of ignoring where they are starting from.

A vast majority of people never figure any of it out yet say, "I really want to get better on my instrument.

Most people can use MapQuest and GOOGLE Maps without any real trouble and do every month with great success.

Where are you?

Where do you want to go?

Get Directions!

Head in that direction!

Greg Vail

You Tube Changes

I have been a little biffed at You Tube for the past 2 weeks now. They either changed something pretty big in rating videos for there search engine or they have slapped me with some kind of penalty.

My video views have been down over a thousand a day from before this unknown event. I have looked around the web for any answers and found nothing that might be current or possible given my clips and history.

The drag is, over time we all start to put too much into these numbers because they are real bragging rights. I know I have many clips of my music on other peoples pages - my songs and live stuff that doesn't figure in, but now I have views artificially dropped, and all I can figure is GOOGLE must think they are not legitimate views. I have a dozen sites with clips posted and it appears the views from at least one of these sites is not being counted.

I am not gonna complain for long. Just saying I am going thru withdrawal watching the climb to 2 million you tube views slow down a bunch, all on 1 strange day 2 weeks ago. Hoped it was temporary but it looks like it is regular now.....

Too busy - summer 2011

Summer 2011 has been a scream!

I can not keep up with all the work and opportunities, often needing to pass on stuff that makes me sad I can't be apart!

My biggest freak is that summer is almost over. The Orange County Fair is gone. The Festival of Arts ends in 2 days. The Summer bookings have begun closing up. I can't believe it is over.....

That means Christmas is around the corner! Love the change of focus every summer and I realize the next big thing is Christmas! Wish I had the Christmas tracks done I had planned on doing for 2012. So much for getting the business plan done and seeing new product. I hope to do 3 tracks this year now but have an overwhelming weight over my head with taxes needing to get finished up in the next 2 weeks and I am heading out of town AGAIN!

South Dakota - here I come! Celebrate Church will be home in Sioux Falls in a few days for another week. I love my family out there and pray amazing things can be accomplished in my week in the humidity!!

Gotta blast for now. I have a saxophone to unpack and review. A few more articles for WWBW need to be finished before I leave Thursday for Sioux Falls!

Peace and blessings,

Greg Vail ~ saxboy ~ gvSAXBOY

Summer 2011 has been amazing!

I have been so busy and it is a great thing. Work has been off the hook and I have been buried in live shows and recording on new CDs like the old days! It USED TO BE like this all the time! The last few months have been non-stop and I love working!

I have thousands of pictures to get thru along with video and audio recordings from dozens of great gigs. I am sorry I have not got caught up yet but this is the first day off I have had weeks and I ended up helping a friend with some gear and have family stuff to do shortly.

Life is good.

So thankful.....

Magnetiq - A Brecker / Brecker Brothers Tribute

The first video clips have been posted of the new band I have been rehearsing with - Magnetiq.

...the concept is simple.

We love this music and have been inspired to be better musicians over the years by Micheal Brecker and the Brecker Brothers music. So - a group of Southern California musicians have begun learning and performing our favorites from the many Brecker tracks we all love.

My big disclaimer is needed here - I am not even close to the mastery of a great like Michael Brecker. My interest is the music Michael Brecker recorded and the challenge of attempting to do it justice live as we begin booking dates around the south land and beyond.

We have 3 dates scheduled:

Sunday - July 31st - Seal Beach - 6PM-9PM
Spagettini's Italian Grill and Jazz Club
3005 Old Ranch Pkwy, Seal Beach, CA
562-596-2199

Monday - August 8th - Laguna Beach - 6PM-8PM
Festival of Arts / Pageant of the Masters
650 Laguna Canyon Rd, Laguna Beach, CA

Sunday - August 21st - Lake Forest - 7PM-10PM
Saddleback Church Refinery
1 Saddleback Pkwy, Lake Forest, CA

Summer gigs are going great!!

We are in the middle of a summer full of music! I just finished up at Ruby's tonight and it was packed. Downtown San Juan Capistrano was buzzing with activity with a city concert going on and every club in town blasting music. It was a good night and you missed out if you stayed home!

Dean Grech Band featuring Greg Vail at the Festival of Arts Summer 2011Last night I was at a favorite summer venue for many years now - the Festival of Arts in Laguna Beach. I brought my friend Dean Grech down and we featured much of is music for the evening show with lots of Greg solos and tuns to mix it up. What a blast and amazing band we had. Dean on Guitar, Greg on Sax, Hal Ratliff on Keys, Michael Kennedy on Bass and Jason Smith on Drums - WOW!! The band sounded amazing and I had a blast seeing so many familiar faces out for the show!!

Coming up - Friday night at Ruby's in downtown Orange at the train station, Saturday and Sunday at Saddleback church services and Sunday night a Disney session with - Flute, Pic, Penny Whistles, Clarinet and Bass Clarinet! FUN!

Been running like crazy with rehearsals, new music to learn or review and shows nearly nightly! I am loving it too!

Here is the Greg Vail calendar from Reverb Nation - get out and enjoy the music!!

Busy week - lots of shows this month!

Lots of shows this week! So excited to be working 9 days straight! I know we old timers say it all the time, BUT - IT USED TO BE LIKE THIS ALL THE TIME! A few days off a week was all we saw on the calendar! Now it is an amazing news worthy event! oh well.....

Today I am in Long Beach at McKenna's with Ocean Blvd. Band. A packed house is always the call. The music is classic - vocal with great spots for some sax! The band is large and the venue will be rockin!

I then fly out to Bower's Museum in Santa Ana for a Yukiko Matsuyama at 7PM. It is Asian month at Bower's and the event begins at 5PM - $65.00 - but the band starts at 7PM. What an awesome world music event this will be with Koto, full band and eastern percussion to take it to a totally 'other' place.

NEW SAX VIDEO POSTED ON YOUTUBE!

I have a new sax video clip from the Dean Grech DVD just posted on You Tube. This is another Tenor Saxophone Solo video clip with Greg Vail featured on that Tenor Sax!

The last clip I posted has been spinning pretty hard on You Tube! Check out another video clip from that same show - Dean Grech Band featuring Greg Vail on Sax and Flute.
(over 6,000 views since May - not bad......)

So - gotta hit it hard here - I'm out for now - praying for some great performances and know the crowds will be awesome today! So much going on - sorry for long breaks in posting!

Be blessed and GET OUT AND LISTEN TO SOME MUSIC - LIVE.
reminder - we listen with our ears - close your eyes and listen......
