SAXBOY Saxophone Player Greg Vail - sax

Home from Sioux Falls

I am back home from a long week in Sioux Falls South Dakota and glad to be back. I have dozens of things to get moving on and always a ton of catch up following a long road trip.

Celebrate Church was awesome this past week. We had an amazing service celebrating our country's freedom with an actual survivor of the USS Arizona speaking at all the services last weekend. What a trip to hear first hand experiences from an infamous day in American history.  The message is on the home page right now - www.celebratesf.org/ - PLAY VIDEO.....

His name was John D Anderson and at 93, he was full of stories, energy and faith! We all felt very special to have spent some time with this man. He is a hero in the truest sense of the word!

The trip home was horrible, unfortunately. The post below details the long trip up to my over night stay at the Denver airport. I did get out today on an earlier flight than I was scheduled for, but have been trashed all day from the experience and lack of any sleep.

So - back at it! I have bills to pay, students to schedule, gigs all weekend and dear ones to catch up with.

I played a new steady tonight at Ruby's in Orange - the Steamliner Lounge. Good night and fun people made it bearable as tired as I felt!

Tomorrow - Saturday - a private party with Blake Aaron!

Sunday I have a church gig in the AM and the Greg Vail Pro Jam 4-8PM at Scarantino's in Lake Forest.

The Schedule for all upcoming shows is up on Reverb Nation. Check it out and get out and listen to some fun music SOON!!

United Airlines becoming the biggest and lamest?

I am so sad to hear of United Airlines acquisition of Continental Airlines. They claim this will make United the biggest and best airline in the western world. I sadly agree that they may become the biggest but will argue 'the best' for years to come.

United Airlines Breaks Guitars! The video changed this corporate monster when a destroyed guitar motivated a video that went viral and, in the end, began to cost United big time, right where they could feel it. They ended up making right on that error and the video is still a favorite among musicians the world over.

You see, the fact is UNITED DOES NOT CARE AT ALL. United doesn't care about customers. United doesn't care about any group of people. United doesn't care about anything but profits and, in hind site, bad press that sticks.

I have noticed that United invites our servicemen to early seating, in a tongue and cheek statement that makes it sound like they love our military guys. But what I believe was in the news a while back was a scandal that they got busted by the press for treating our service men and woman like crap. It blew up and now they kiss butt because they don't like the bad press. They don't seem to care about anything unless it costs them in a real financial way. Our military travels all over the world in civilian flights = bad for business.

SO - why am I ranting on United Airlines today?

Because I am sitting in an airport, overnight thanks to a complete lack of any customer service. I had to stand in line staring at a sign that said UNITED CUSTOMER SERVICE CENTER and I wanted to call an attorney and sue them for false advertising!

Let me share my day today. I was scheduled to fly from Sioux Falls South Dakota to Denver and then to Orange County. I have flown many times over the past 25+ years and knew we were running close on time when I was dropped off this morning.

I breathed a sigh of relief as I walked in the door because it was still over 30 minutes out and there was NO LINE at the ticket counter. I struggled to get to the counter with all my baggage and said something like, "What a treat to be running late and have no line today!" The chick at the Sioux Falls Ticket counter said, "Are you on the 150 to Denver?" I said yes as I handed her my ID and ticket. I was handed back my ID and told to run it in the check in thing. I ran it and looked a little tweaked as I realized it wouldn't do anything.

The chick was real SERVICE oriented as she said, "Your not getting on that flight!" I thn got a barrage of crap for not being there 1 hour before departure and was told I was late and going to have to go on standby.

I argued with her and it was not log before an asian dude joined in and rudly said, "It's your own fault! You were late! You are contracted by ticket to be here 1 hour before departure. You are late and it's your fault!"

I argued that the verbiage they use is "It is suggested that you arrive at least....." depending on the type of flight. I was told it was in the contract and to bad. I was then told I could go on standby for the next flight.

The fee is 75 dollars to go on standby! I have been flying my entire adult musician life and never heard of a 75 dollar fee to go stand by!?!? I was given no other option so I said fine, "I need to get home!"

This ugly (now) little older lady and her side kick Asian coconspirator slowly checked in my bags and left me running for the gate. Now Sioux Falls is a small little airport with 6 gates and often a quick checkin turn around without incidence.

Today was a very different day. I was at the gate quickly and say my plane sitting there with the door still open cuz the gate guys were in and out. Of course I asked the guy at the gate about seating and he said the flight booked in full. I asked how could it if I was ticketed and confirmed and he said I was too late! "It is not fair to all the other passengers to have to wait for you. I asked if the plane was leaving in the next 1 minute and he said, "You are NOT getting on this flight!" I asked if all the seats were full ad he said YES!

So I then asked why I was charged $75 bucks if he sold my seat and he said it was policy. "You miss your flight and you will be charged $75 to go to standby."

WOW - SO there I sit for 15 more minutes watching my plane before it pulled back and took off. I was pissed! the clock at the ticket counter said 37 minutes when I walked in. The plane left late. AND the jerks sold my seat AND charged me $75 bucks for the privilege of wasting the rest of my day - night and next day trying to get home!

The next flight out of Sioux Falls was a few hours away. I was on standby and went to get some lunch. I came back and was #6 on the standby list! I was -7 minutes late and can't figure out how 5 other people got in front of me.

United OVER BOOKS FLIGHTS! STANDBY means NOTHING if you are overbooking and screwing your ticketed passengers at some unknown but acceptable percentage rate.

I missed that next flight out and had to wait another 2+ hours. At this point I went out to the ticket counter and went a bit nuts!

This guy walks out and I say WHO DO I COMPLAIN TOO?? He said he could take my complaint but said, "If it is due to your missing the flight because you were late, that is just the policy! All United flights and Delta and...." I stopped him by saying WHAT IS POLICY? He started to answer with that same pissy tone he started with and I interrupted again and said United used to have a policy about guitars and 17 million views later they changed that policy! I wonder what the history is on this POLICY? I have flown for 25 years and never had a charge for a standby flight or been treated so crappy and not aloud to check in.

I said, "I wonder what the history is for this "POLICY" and how long it's been in place." He said, "about 6 months, and I don't really agree with some of the fees either. I told him someone better listen to the wording they use because the airports say 'suggested' and no one reads the agreement thing. I think it is all a bunch of BS! And YES - the industry has discussed removing bathrooms and charging for bathroom use! The fees are OUT OF HAND!!!!

SO I complained to him and told him I didn't need a formal file yet because my day was not over yet. I still had to get home; had spent hours getting no where, and was going to BLOG, post, tweet and blast a full regiment of BAD UNITED chants!

The last flight out of Sioux Falls was at 8pm. Almost 7 hours and very rude people doing ? customer service? I sat there and watched 8 available seats move to 2 while my name stayed #1 and the only name on Standby. I got called up and given a seat - what joy!

But then the Denver airport is reported CLOSED due to bad weather. I had little time between flights and was starting to stress. The flight at Frontier announced boarding to Denver and left and our butt-head dude just got on the intercom and said we had no update and he would let us know when we did.

An hour late and we board the plane and leave for Denver. I thought maybe the flights out would be a little behind too?? We landed in Denver and then sat - for hours! I guess the fuel tower was hit by lightening and there was no gate open. All the planes were stuck without any fuel and couldn't leave the gates!

I thought that mean that our connecting flights might still be here too but somehow it didn't work that way. By the time I got to the gate there was 1 flight still showing to Ontario and I could not get anyone to help me with that. The entire "CUSTOMER SERVICE" line was a hundred people long!

Now I had been on the phone all day with my girlfriend getting help from her online. She gave my the customer service number for United and I called and had flights booked by some guy in India long before I got to the front of the line but still went up there to confirm and double check.

It would appear some guy in India did a better job than any of the American United Customer Service had all day. He was actually kinda nice too.

WELL - here I am. And Unfortunately it is still not over. I have been at the Denver Airport for over 4 hours now and have a departure set for noon, with a possible 9 am departure on standby.

I have tons f time. I can't sleep. I am really pissed at United Airlines and told them I would BLOG, post, rant, tweet, and whatever I could do to share how unhappy I was with these faker's.

Only 6 more hours before the possible departure for Standby! Then we have a noon booked flight that should work for sure. My issue is why those butt-heads sucked so bad in Sioux Falls

So wanted to be home! So wanted to get started catching up.

So pissed at United for treating people like garbage and for killing so much valuable time today and yesterday!

 United Airlines Sucks!!!

July 4th is here - celebrate freedom

Hey blog peeps - I am in South Dakota at Celebrate Church for July 4th weekend. Sioux Falls is hot and humid and I am not ready for the heat but excited to be here for the weekend.

We are doing all patriotic music and I love it! I have to say - Southern California does not do the patriotic holidays and festivities half as cool as the rest of the country. I don't know if it is due to our lack of 'older' history, generally shallow character, or culturally diverse backgrounds that make it politically incorrect to be an American.

What I do know is - Southern California is sucking big time and Gov. Brown is helping make it more sucky everyday. I want to personally thank all those that voted Brown back in to office. I would like to suggest that all those responsible for Brown be forced to STAY in California until he leaves office. It is already more painful today than yesterday.

BUT I DIGRESS --

It is our collective freedom that allows for mistakes and moves to other states that we celebrate this week!

Happy 4th of July!

LET FREEDOM RING..........................

I just wish Californians were less stupid - less politically correct to the point of giving away any future we once had -- less open-minded to the point of there brains pouring out on the ground --
Why have we bought all the lies?
America was free and Christian - lies by unGodly fools are teaching our kids otherwise. But HISTORIC DOCUMENTS still show a complete lack of separation of the presence of the CHURCH in every aspect of government, The issues was never to silence the church and moral governing - the issues of separation had to do with keeping government out of the church - with an expectation the government would be run by principles of the Bible.
I am so angered at the lies that continue to shout out from ignorant people that want to ignore the faith of the Founding Fathers. They say it is a mystery - what they meant - 200 years ago - we have no idea. Don't ask the founding fathers - they wrote hundreds of volumes of intent and examples that would send the Liberals screaming and running for the hills. How many of our early leaders had gone thru seminary and were pastors? Graduation ceremonies with Bible reading? Alter calls from Judges that sentenced convicts to death - CRAZY!

I'm just saying.......

You don't have to like it and you can continue to undo the facts - but our founding fathers were amazing and real - and Christians! Freedom didn't grow on a tree one day......

Enjoy the freedoms we have to enjoy today.....
Know that they are less today then they were 10 years ago....

Blackberry with broken trackball joystick

Blackberry phone with a broken joy stick - trackball

Today's post is a simple Blackberry cell phone information post. I looked online for a long time and could not find help with a Blackberry phone with a bad trackball joystick thing. The questions are online everywhere. People can go down but not up, or up and not down. What are the shortcuts on the actual Blackberry phone?? How do you get around on the dang Blackberry if your trackball is not working?? Can you replace a Blackberry trackball?

A few questions I had over the last YEAR!!

Blackberry Shortcuts

SO - Blackberry has a bunch of shortcuts listed that NO ONE would ever use!! But there are a few really helpful shortcuts I discovered and will share right here.IF you are like most people - the most important thing to know is how to dial, answer and text with no trackball.

To dial a call - just press the green phone button and you will be on the outgoing call page.
You can also just start dialing a phone number or a name from your home screen page and the phone seems to just know what to do. It seems to drop into the phone book or call from there.
The green phone - top left button is the call send button.

Need to be able to make a call. Got it!

Blackberry trackball is broken

What about texting?

I found you can start to make a call - the way I mentioned above - and instead of hitting the call button - green phone - you press the menu key and - if you can go down - SMS Text is an option. I found a way to text!
BUT - the bad news is - When you text, people usually respond by text! I had to figure out how to check text messages and not look like a bad person that might be ignoring you.

The SHIFT key on a computer makes letters capitol letters. The SHIFT key on the Blackberry is the bottom left and right keys. If you SHIFT and hit M on the keyboard it takes you to the MESSAGE screen and you can see your texts! But how do you go UP to the NEW TEXT?
SHIFT and T on the keyboard takes you to the top of any page!!

Life changing! hahahaha.....

Then i discovered something crazy. People are talking about replacing trackballs online. I hear how easy stuff is to do yourself all the time. I am a sax player and I find most things a little harder than "people" say!
But I tried it anyway! It just pops out and it really is as easy as changing a battery in a flashlight!

I went to Amazon and ordered 2 new trackballs for my Blackberry for 4 dollars - including shipping!

SO - Fix your own Blackberry trackball by replacing it with a new one - OR - find the few shortcuts you might actually need and work around it! Bottom line is this joystick thing is cool until it sucks

AOL and Gmail - RANT

A quick word about AOL.

One has to wonder how one of the companies that started the email thing and had everyone using them has become such a piece of poop! AOL blew up on my end of the year and I lost thousands of emails I really didnt want to not have! Then I started a Gmail account and started using both and I have noticed a few things.

2 days of email
AOL 350 messages in the spam folder
Gmail 1 message in the spam folder
AOL average of 20 spam messages a day in my in box
Gmail 0 spam messages in my in box
AOL REPORT AS SPAM button does NOTHING - I see the same email address with spam messages in my in box and spam folder all the time. WHY do I report - THEY SUCK!
Gmail no problems - even get non-spam messages that AOL lost in my Gmail
AOL actually has messages in my in box that start with *****SPAM***** in the subject line. If they can identify it as SPAM WHY is it in my email in box listed as SPAM????

AOL =  COMPLETELY SUCKS in EVERY WAY!
Gmail  =  STOMPS AOL in EVERY WAY! I can not believe AOL SUCKS as bad as it does. To Fall from the KING to a useless service that works like poop is an American privilege and, sadly, marks the direction of too many icons in the business world. Yes I know GOOGLE is American too. But how long does the position of KING take before  they start sucking weenie too?
Don't get me started or I will have to go after My Space and now Face Book too............

Home and getting busy for summer

Hey BLOG peeps!

You know the drill - I have always been honest and here it is again. When you don't see a post forever, it is because I am actually busy! Things have been crazy around here! If you see regular posts I am lying thru my teeth about how cool I am because it is really hard to get posts together when everything is really going great!

SO - back from an amazing week in South Dakota! I served at Celebrate Church for a full week and was a little worried I would not have enough to do! Hahahahahaa - I was buried! I don't know how I could ever be worried about free time because I never really have it.

I prepared for and did 5 weekend services with a repeat done live on Wednesday night making it 6 total! I did Jack Black Voice-overs, a studio shoot for a video testimony for the next weeks services, held a jam for the church musicians, worked on a guys computer and had a dozen meetings with people. My days lasted from early till exhaustion late at night! I had an amazing time and can't wait till next months trip. The services were all music services that weekend and the musicians really stepped up to the plate and did amazing jobs! I was watching a posted service yesterday and was move to see and hear the music sounding so good! It was amazing since some of the songs were hard enough we couldn't even start them at the rehearsal! These guys came so far in a week!! I was so proud of everyone!

So I came home to a late deadline for Woodwind and Brass Wind articles and I had some serious writing to finish with no hope of getting them out on time since it was already June! I did get them done and sent - the last one was 5 days late! Tried my best, but I do have to say, I had no idea I would have NO FREE TIME in Sioux Falls for an entire week! hahahaha

SO - articles are out and a new sax is here to test and review along with a list of topics for June I have to get started on. I love writing but I am not sure about this deadline thing......

The rest of this week has been pouring around a little girls 12th birthday party! Vanessa turns 12 and the big party is Friday - tomorrow! I have been - ordered a cake - working on lighting for the dance - getting a sub for the boom boom - organizing the pick up schedule for tomorrow to get everything - costume shopping or my girls costume dance party - shoe shopping in a bit - and I still need to get all this work piled up done!

I have so many sessions waiting for some recording time I cant count them right now. 4 from 1 guy, 2 from another, and 2 more guys with 1 tune each - I think..... SO - recording needs to get started.

I also have been on the phone 5-6 hours a day with work calls, scheduling and booking disasters are popping up everywhere! I love being busy! I love music and being busy when I have a sax in my hands. I am not always very good at making the change from bored out of my mind to so much work I cant get it all done though!

SO - short post to say - sorry I have been away. The Twitter gets updates from the Face Book stuff and those are quick and often from the phone - BUT - this pore blog got missed for 2 weeks. Good news is I am working ad life is really good, I hope y'all are feeling the blessings and I will try and update soon.

I have a few thousand pictures to get online, 4 gigs of video that need to get on youtube and a dozen sites that I need to update - but for now - shoe shopping is the call - love and hugs, greg

Sioux Falls - Video of the falls in South Dakota

Just posted but thought I would share 1 more video of the Falls in Sioux Falls. Spent the day at the falls last Memorial Day and put the video to music from my Smooth Jazz Classics CD - You're the Biggest Part of Me written by David Pack of Ambrosia. Turned out pretty cool and you can see some of the beauty of South Dakota in the clip!

Memorial Day and Sioux Falls South Dakota

Hey blog peeps! Hope spring is in full bloom around you and a quick prayer for those affected by all the tornado's this year! So many have lost so much. We need to be thankful for our lives and I am thankful we have not lost anybody close to our family, but know I have family near many of the areas hit hard that did know people lost - our prayers go out to you....

Thank God summer is on the way! In So Cal things are warming up and days have been near perfect. I have been blessed with an extreme increase in work and feel so very grateful for the change and blessings!!

I am heading off to my new Church Staff job tomorrow - now on part time staff at Celebrate Church in Sioux Falls, South Dakota!!! I love my new home away from home! I love the pastors, people and music at Celebrate Church and feel so very blessed to be apart of a place where God is moving big time!!

Many have asked if I am moving out there and I want to let you know it is a long commute and I am staying in Southern California, near my kids and family, flying out a week a month to help grow the music and serve in Sioux Falls.

I really feel like this is a best of both worlds situation! I get to be involved on staff and with a great music program, yet still get to go to my home church in Mission Viejo and see my kids often! What a cool blessing!!

SO - heading out to Sioux Falls tomorrow and will be gone thru the 2nd of June! I will be here for my little girls birthday in June and my next trip in July leaves me home for Ben's birthday too! Schedule is working out really good so far.

Last Memorial Day weekend I was in Sioux Fall's and had to miss my first KSBR BASH in years! The BASH is an unusual event that brings 50 Smooth Jazz musicians together for a huge 4 hour show every Memorial Day Weekend on the Sunday of the week. I will not be there again this year - off to a new assignment - BUT - my heart is very aware that I will be missing a legendary event and that makes me a little sad! If you are in the Southern California area, get over this Sunday and experience the BASH!

KSBR.net for more info!

My Video site is featuring BASH Videos and Memorial Day Videos right now. I am not going to post all the clips here but will include the Memorial Day Videos below.

This first clip was recorded at Sioux Falls Celebrate Church last year on Memorial Day Weekend! Features Tara Faber on Vocals, Greg Vail on Tenor Saxophone and the Celebrate Church Music Team! ENJOY!

Another clip of the same song but very different.....

America the Beautiful - Rob Mullins Band featuring Greg Vail Tenor Saxophone.
Recorded live at the 1 year anniversary of 9.11 -  very passionately.
SAX is in at around 3:45 to the end but listen and read thru the entire clip - very moving....
Images from Greg Vail's photo collection - Founding Father and Famous Quotes added.

I will be pretty bust over the next 8 days and come home to a packed weekend with the Greg Vail Pro Jam at Scarantino's on Sunday the 4th on June! Check and BOOKMARK the Calendar Page - 2 schedules are listed and the GOOGLE Calendar is not working but the REVERB NATION Calendar is fully functional and has all upcoming public performances listed!

Hope to see you at a show soon. Summer is the time to get out and enjoy some LIVE MUSIC!!

Thanks for visiting the blog and - again - HAVE A BLESSED MEMORIAL DAY! Remember we are blessed but with a cost - cuz our freedom was not free......
